First DisplayPort to HDMI 2.0 Adapters Surface

EDIT (Feb 13, 2015): I’ve posted a review of the unit here.

The Core i3, i5 and i7 NUCs of the current and past generations have featured a Mini DisplayPort 1.2 interface that can support a 4k display at 60 frames per second resolution. However, the HDMI port that the same units have supports only 30 frames per second. Conversion of the 4k 60 fps signal from DisplayPort to HDMI 2.0 requires an active adapter and these have not been available until this day.

Most of the current 4k televisions are only equipped with a HDMI 2.0 interface and no DisplayPort so it has not been possible to plug a NUC to such a TV and enjoy 4k resolutions at 60 fps. This even if the NUC itself is technically capable of supporting 4k at 60 fps. It looks like this is about to change though.

Club 3D CAC-1170 HDMI 2.0 adapter

Club 3D seems to be the first manufacturer to get their DisplayPort to HDMI 2.0 adapters on the market. Their website already features the Mini DisplayPort 1.2 to HDMI 2.0 adapter as well as the standard DisplayPort 1.2 to HDMI 2.0 adapter. For a NUC you’d like to use the former.

The specifications look promising, this is a true HDMI 2.0 capable adapter unlike some others we’ve seen before:

  • Compliant to DisplayPort Specification 1.2
  • Compliant to HDMI™ Specification 2.0
  • Supports full link training and no link training
  • 24-bit color and 4:4:4 color sampling
  • Internal YCbCr 4:4:4 /4:2:2 to YCbCr 4:2:0 conversion capability
  • Supports UHD resolutions up to 3840 x 2160p @ 60Hz and 1080p 3D
  • Repeater for HDCP 1.3 and HDCP 2.2
  • Powered by USB Port (no external power needed)

I spoke with the company this week and the first batch of the adapters is already gone, but they expect to be able to start shipping again in February. They kindly promised to send me one for review as well. I’ll definitely will be taking a look at how does it work together with the Skylake NUC so stay tuned.

I think Intel missed an opportunity not including HDMI 2.0/HDCP 2.2 natively on the Skylake NUCs. Across various forums there are quite a few home media enthusiasts who are not planning to upgrade from the prior generation specifically due to this.

Will be interesting to see how well the adapter works.

I just got it delivered yesterday, doesn’t work on my brix pro ( iris pro 4200). can’t go beyond 30hz at 3840 x 2160. my gaming pc works though

doesn’t work on my nuc5i3ryk either.. tops out at 20hz as well… updated to latest drivers but no joy..

Doesn’t work on Intel HD Graphics 4600.

No word from Club 3D as to why this appears to be the case when the product is sold as supporting Intel/AMD/Nvidia

    Doesn’t work on Geforce GTX660..

  6. I will try this on my NUC6i5SYK later today :) Let’s see if it support HDMI 2.0a also.

  7. Good news! With a firmware upgrade from Club3D support I got it working. So now I have 3840x2160p@60Hz output on both Windows 10 and OpenELEC.

For the techies, this adapter is based on this chip:

So it will do DP1.3 and HDMI 2.0a :) Not sure if current firmware supports 2.0a

    • A tip for others doing the firmware update:
Do it on an older PC with miniDP/DP port. I could not get the firmware update to run on my NUC6. Also if you get an error first time upgrading just rerun the upgrade and it will finish just fine.
